CHAPTER THIRTEEN

He rushed from the building, grinning like a madman and nearly skipping for joy. This one had been even easier than the last. The priest hadn’t even taken much convincing before he took the knife.

The mess was unfortunate. Next time he would have to give more explicit instructions on how to use the weapon. Still, the deed was done, justice was served, and a few more innocent victims could rest in peace.

There was nothing like this. The killers he’d read about were right. Nothing could match the sheer elation and joy of killing, especially when the victim deserved to die. It was the sweetest kind of justice to see blood shed righteously. He wondered if this was how the Knights Templar felt when they slaughtered the Jewish and Muslim populations in Europe.

Of course, the Knights Templar were evil, like his victims were evil. Well, not exactly alike, but close enough. They were religious fanatics who murdered people who didn’t share their faith. He dispensed a very human justice for a very human crime.

But he couldn’t honestly say he wasn’t fanatic. The joy he felt now certainly felt religious in its intensity. In fact, it fulfilled him far more than religion ever did. He had never left church feeling like he had done some good for the world. He had never walked out of Mass feeling blessed to be alive. He had never stood up from prayer filled with purpose the way he was filled now.

He reached the street and slowed to a walk. There was no need to rush anymore. No one would suspect him of being a murderer. He looked the exact opposite of that. He was the exact opposite of that. What he dispensed wasn’t murder but justice, and he looked exactly like that. An agent of justice.

He reached his car and turned the engine on. The V8 rumbled to life, and he spent a moment basking in the throaty roar of the motor.

He would be sad when they finally retired the last of the Crown Vics. The newer cars were sleek and capable, but he would miss the deep basso growl of the old Ford Triton engine. There was something so American about the rumble of a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sedan. It was one of the timeless sounds of history. Not so timeless after all, he supposed. It was all about forced-induction low-displacement engines now. Soon, those would disappear too, and cars would be little more than moving batteries.

Oh well. Everything had to fade eventually. He switched his radio on and called back to dispatch. His shift wouldn’t begin for another half hour, but he liked to check in as often as possible when he was in his vehicle. He supposed that was a little over the top, but he didn’t mind going the extra mile. He loved his job, and he loved his city, and this was just one way he showed that love.

He told the dispatcher that he was going to stop for coffee and donuts before his shift started.
